About Quillquest
Last updated
Quillquest is a working notebook about writing and reading poetry: what a form actually requires, what an exercise is for, and what a close reading can and cannot settle.
What is here
Three kinds of entry. Forms explain a fixed shape — a sonnet, a haiku, a villanelle — including the parts that introductions usually skip, such as why an octave closes itself off or what a pivot costs you. Exercises are timed or counted drills with hard rules, because a constraint teaches faster than an intention. Reading notes take one poem, usually one in the public domain, and go line by line through a decision the poet made.
What makes it different
Every entry carries a specimen. The forms are demonstrated with an original poem in that form rather than described in the abstract, and the exercises show a worked example produced under their own rules — including the lines that did not come out clean. Where a claim is arguable, the notes say so and give the reading that disagrees.
How it is made
The site is built as static pages from a single content file, so a correction reaches every list, every language and the sitemap at once. English and Chinese versions are written separately rather than translated line by line: the argument is the same, the sentences are not. Figures are generated as vector line drawings from the first letter of each entry's title, and they are regenerated whenever the entry is rebuilt.
Corrections
If a metre count is wrong, a rhyme scheme mislabelled, or a quotation attached to the wrong poem, write to [email protected] with the page address. Corrections to a fact are made in the text and reflected in the date at the top of the page.
What this site is not
It is not a workshop and it does not read your work — no submissions, no feedback service, no account. It is not a publisher, and the specimens here are ours, written for demonstration. Quotations from other poets are limited to works in the public domain or to short extracts used for commentary.
Editorial principles
- No sponsored content and no affiliate links inside entries.
- Advertising, where present, is separated from editorial content and has no influence on what is published.
- Every specimen is labelled as a specimen. Nothing here is passed off as a found text.
